Muslim and African American leaders will gather at a special event in Dallas, Texas to mark the growing diversity of the new Congress and celebrate the political empowerment of the six million Muslims who call America home.
Congressman-elect Keith Ellison, an African American, became the first muslim to be elected to the U.S. Congress in last November's mid-term elections. Ellison also has the distinction of being the first African American from Minnesota to be elected to Congress.
According to Aftab Siddiqui, vice chair of the Texas Muslim Democratic Caucus, "The arrival of first U.S. Muslim, Keith Ellison, in the U.S. Congress on January 4, 2007, is a moment of rejoicing for both the communities. It highlights the beauty of the American political system that has made it possible for minorities to be represented at the highest levels of the government."
A number of community leaders, including Mustafa Carroll, Khaleel Meek , Rev. Peter Johnson, Minister Jeffery Mohamed, Ambassador Syed Ahsani, and Dr. Yasmin Khan are expected to address the gathering.
